Café Reconcile and the New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute share NOWFE Vision

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience (NOWFE) is proud to announce two new beneficiaries for the 2019 event. A $15K scholarship will be awarded to one New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute (NOCHI) student, while Café Reconcile will receive 100% of the remaining event proceeds. NOWFE’s mission is to support the local community by donating its profits to hospitality-based education programs and other vital community organizations. Over the past 26 years NOWFE has raised more than $1.25 million dollars for local organizations. “Café Reconcile was an obvious choice for us this year,” states Gail Varisco incoming NOWFE President. “It plays an enormous part in the culinary foundation of our community and shares our mission to build stronger community through economic development. It is out honor to support this worthwhile cause.”

Café Reconcile has transformed the lives of more than 1,700 young people since opening in 2000. The program works with more than 90 new “opportunity youth” per year and over 250 alumni — young people aged 16-24 who lack employment and educational opportunities or both. Café Reconcile’s eight-week Life Skills and Workforce Development Program addresses barriers to success, such a homelessness and untreated trauma, while teaching the culinary and professional skills necessary to gain and sustain employment. “We are thrilled that NOWFE has chosen to bestow a scholarship upon one of our NOCHI students,” states Ti Martin, NOCHI Chairwoman. “NOWFE has been a champion for culinary education for many years and it has helped restaurateurs just as much as students who become our future cooks and chefs.” In January 2019 NOCHI will launch with certificate programs in Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Arts. These programs were developed in partnership with CIA (Culinary Institute of America) consulting to provide rigorous, hands-on training for higher wage middle skills jobs. Each program provides approximately 650 hours of instruction over a course of twenty weeks and provides a similar number of lab hours as tough in a traditional two-year associates degree program. For more than 25 years, the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience has showcased the culinary excellence in our community alongside national and international wines at wine dinners in many of the city’s finest restaurants; at VINOLA, a premium tasting event; at the iconic Royal Street Stroll Presented by Rouses; at dozens of culinary seminars and demonstrations; at the Big Gateaux Show; and ultimately at the Grand Tastings. NOWFE has raised more than $1.25 million for local non-profit organizations. In 2018, NOWFE chose Nunez Community College Culinary Arts Program as its sole beneficiary.
